Lois Flickinger, Quilt Artist

Lois Flickinger takes the traditional craft of quilt-making and turns it into a fine art with her hand-stitched miniatures. A stickler for authenticity, she says, “I enjoy the challenge of piecing together such small pieces of fabric using traditional methods rather than the popular methods of paper or foundation piecing.” Each signed and dated, these original works of art are fabulous one-of-a-kind finds never duplicated in exactly the same colors and fabrics. Lois began making quilts more than 25 years ago, when she was a student at Bethel College in North Newton, Kansas. “A love of textiles led to my interest in quilting,” she says. She eventually moved to Akron, Pennsylvania, and became the Quilt Room Supervisor for the Mennonite Central Committee, a not-for-profit organization that assists underserved populations around the world.

During the last few years, she began making miniature quilts – a perfect solution for quilt lovers who want to display these works of art in smaller spaces such as guest bedrooms and baths. “All of the quilting is done by hand, averaging 8 to 10 stitches per inch,” says Lois. Using patterns that were popular among the Mennonite and Amish, Lois chooses the quilting patterns to balance and enhance the overall designs of the quilts. With her eye for design and her expertise, each resulting miniature quilt is simply stunning.
